When I started creating content for social media, the burning question I had was whether I could make money from my first post. Most people at that time suggested building an audience before monetizing their content and unfortunately for me, I saw no other options.
Now I realize that if you use the right tools and plan properly, you can monetize even at the very start of your journey. This guide aims to help you achieve that using simple and realistic approaches.
In this guide, I will demonstrate how you can be paid from your first Instagram post, blog, or YouTube video.
Know What It Means to Monetize Content
Monetization of content refers to earning from anything you post online. This could be in the form of sales, advertisements, commissions, or even sponsorships.
Most new creators believe they must have a product ready, or they must wait until a brand reaches out. The truth is, you don’t need neither of those things at day one. There are approaches you can implement right away and I will make sure to explain them so you can choose the one that resonates best with you.
Choose the Best Way to Earn (Even If You’re Brand New)
Let’s talk about how to monetize in the easiest and most straightforward way possible. You don’t have to try all of them – just diversify with a focus on one at a time, starting from the basics.
Affiliate Marketing
This is one of the most basic ways to start, simply join an affiliate program, get designated links for the products or services, and plug them into your content. When someone clicks and makes a purchase, then you get paid.
What’s great about this is, you don’t have to create anything of your own. All you have to do is recommend products or services you genuinely believe in or use.
Affiliate links naturally flow into blog posts, video descriptions, or even captions on social media. In this case, it could be said that you are compensated for helping others out.
Sponsored Posts
Even smaller creators can get paid content deals. You do not need to have one million followers. Brands actually focus on the engagement metrics and level of trust with the audience.
When you create niche content such as for skincare, budgeting, or fitness, you can become more appealing to small businesses within those industries. You can approach these companies yourself, share details about your audience, and present a marketing strategy to showcase their offerings.
Initially, many brands will provide their products for free. Gradually, such arrangements can develop into compensated contracts.
Digital Products
A problem can easily be solved in the form of a digital product, to give an example: guides, planners, email templates, or training checklists.
It’s easy to underestimate oneself. If you are sharing content on healthy eating, for example, a meal prep plan can be gold. Content focused on social media tips can use a simple content calendar.
This product can be repurposed multiple times for sale.
Donations and Crowdfunding
Oftentimes, people may have the interest to just donate to support your work. On Ko-fi or Buy Me a Coffee fans may send money as a donation easily. This method is optimal when free content is available, or in cases where there is trust between the audience and provider.
Supplemental content or simple “thank you” notes can be given to showcase appreciation.
Pick the Right Platform for You
It is crucial choosing one that you are relaxed using. Every available platform has unique and different possibilities of generating income.
Blogging
If blogging is something you enjoy doing as well as teach, then this one is for you. Blogging is one of the best ways to increase your visibility on the internet because it’s the best tool for search engine optimization, and using services such as Google will always find your content regardless of how out of date it is.
Blogging allows you to put affiliate links, sell digital products, and capture marketing emails. If you want full control, you can go for WordPress or Ghost. Medium is likely easier, but offers you less customization options.
YouTube
You can leverage the power of video with YouTube. Apart from being able to earn from the platform’s ad program, you can also promote products in your video descriptions, and links in the video’s text box.
If you are camera-shy, you can always opt for voiceovers, screen recordings, or animations. Tutorials, how-to guides, and informative content that solves a problem tends to work especially well here. YouTube is great starting point if you can teach someone something valuable and informative.
Social Media
Instagram, TikTok, and X Twitter are all perfectly valid starting spots too. You don’t need a website, and they allow you to gain an audience quickly using short form content.
These platforms are best when your content is visual narrative, or story driven. They’re great for quick tips, behind-the-scenes action, or for fostering a community around a specific lifestyle or hobby.
Create Content With a Purpose
Here is where most beginners have trouble. Even if you have the best tools in the world, your content will not bring in any money if it does not have a specific goal or value.
What your first post should accomplish is to aid the reader or viewer in solving an issue. That can be anything from helping them choose the best budget app to teaching them how to set up a home office.
Once you have helped them solve a problem, you can smoothly suggest a product, link, or support option like so:
- “If you want to learn how to manage your finances, here’s the app I use to track my spending—[insert affiliate link].”
- “If you want to try this too, download my free printable planner.”
- “Did you enjoy this? if so, you can support me with a coffee here.”
Consumers are more inclined to buy or click on links when they have already received something of value, and that is why ramping up your value first is key.
Add Monetization Tools Without Tech Overwhelm
The technical aspects worried me when I started. Fortunately, there are many tools available today that simplify things quite a bit.
As a basic example, if you are selling a product, you do not need to create a complete website or online store. Through platforms such as Gumroad or Payhip, you can simply upload your product and begin selling it within an hour. They manage payments, downloads, and delivery on your behalf.
Affiliate tracking can be accomplished using free link-shortening services such as Bitly for tracking clicks. This can easily be done by WordPress users, as they can use plugins such as Pretty Links.
If you wish to start collecting emails , you can use tools like ConvertKit and MailerLite, which are user-friendly and offer free services until a specific number of subscribers is reached.
Share Smart, Not Just Often
Posting the content is only the starting point. If no one views it, you will not generate any income. In the formative years, this is where most of your focus and effort will need to go.
If you are engaged in some social media narratives revolving around communities of your domain, take advantage of social media in general as the starting tool. Start joining Facebook groups, Reddit threads and Discord Servers that relate to the topic of your interest. Answer the questions, provide aid to people, and from time to time when it makes sense to share content with people who need it.
Look beyond a one-off post. Content posting can be strategized. For example, take a blog post and create a carousel post on Instagram. Record a short TikTok with tips. Post a short thread on Twitter with key takeaways from the blog post. All of these take minimal effort while expanding your reach.
Pay Attention to What Works (and Keep Doing That)
Best creators learn from their results. Do not estimate, use the metrics you have. If blogging is your thing; install Google Analytics to monitor which posts have the most views, as well as where your traffic originates. For Instagram and Youtube, check the posts and videos that have the most saves, comments, shares, and views.
Don’t forget monetization. If affiliate links are used, watch which products are getting clicks. For digital products, note which items people are inquiring or downloading the most.
If it works, do it more often. If it flops, alter it and attempt again.
Avoid These Common Beginner Traps
If I had the opportunity, I’d go back and prevent myself from doing a few specific things:
- People know when they are being marketed to, be authentic. Don’t promote products you wouldn’t use. It ruins trust.
- First offer help instead of rushing to sell, because sales become an easier endeavor after that.
Don’t neglect the fundamental policies. Don’t forget to give the necessary restrictions. Basic sentences like “This essay has affiliate hyperlinks” shield both your readers and you.
